Removable Braces, Brentwood, Essex

Removable braces include the various orthodontic options which are not fixed to the teeth. These range from Invisalign, to functional braces. They can be removed for eating, brushing, sports or playing a musical instrument. Sometimes wearing a removable orthodontic appliance is necessary prior to placing fixed metal braces. This is only required in selective cases, and it will be discussed with you if this is a necessary part of your orthodontic treatment plan.

Generally, this type of brace is used to treat narrow dental arches, deep bite (overbite), crossbite and various other orthodontic issues.

The most common type of removal brace is made from plastic plates with metal clips that clip around the teeth.

Functional Removable Braces

Functional braces include appliances such as ‘The Twin Block’, these are effective functional braces which can be used as an interceptive treatment option. They are sometimes offered as an ideal solution to manage growing patients, for example to reduce the front teeth from projecting or managing a patient with a retruded jaw. These removable braces are most successful between the ages of 10-14.

A functional appliance is also called a growth modification brace, as it helps to encourage the lower jaw to grow and encourages the forward movement of the teeth. Functional appliances can solve a selection of bite problems. They can be made for either the upper jaw, lower jaw, or separate parts which interlock. They can be clipped in and removed for eating, brushing, sports or playing a musical instrument. These appliances can only be used in children and benefit patients by avoiding the need for dental extractions. If worn sufficiently it can reduce the time needed to wear a fixed appliance.
